State legislative fights will probably have a greater influence on many of the issues affecting voters’ day-to-day lives than other contests this cycle — even the presidential race.
Today in The New York Times, we announced The States Project’s goal to invest an unprecedented $70M in state legislative efforts across the country. Our analysis shows that this level of spending will allow us to bring our game-changing electoral program to the most critical state legislative races happening this November — races that will determine whether we can protect our rights and freedoms, and ultimately, the direction of our country.
Thanks to your support, we’ve raised nearly $45M of our goal. Thank you for understanding the importance of this work, and for fueling it.
But the stakes are too high for us to aim for anything less than this historic, necessary investment. We must hit our $70M target to run our full program in state legislatures across the country, including in the districts where we will need every tactic in our toolbox to defend democracy. If we don't, candidates will have budget gaps. We will be forced to make tough decisions that will impact these races, which are decided on the margins.
There is still time to mount the biggest possible effort to protect our democracy where it is most at risk, but the clock is ticking. We’ve never needed you, our most important supporters, more.
Onward.
